It’s no news that Chicago has a serious crime problem. Nor is this the first time the streets of Chicago have run with blood. The era of prohibition comes to mind when a lawful business, the production and sale of beverage alcohol, was made illegal. The business didn’t disappear, it was just appropriated by gangsters who turned Chicago into a war zone as they battled for control of the illicit liquor trade.
In Chicago today, liquor isn’t illegal, but the city has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation. Given the level of serious crimes, Chicago stands as a poster child for the fact that gun laws just don’t work.
During prohibition, the liquor barons had so much money that they could corrupt local law enforcement. As a result, the Feds were sent in to clean the place up. We remember these agents, of course, as the Untouchables. Eliot Ness and his team have long since passed on, but it looks like a similar effort is forming to clean up Chicago once again.
It should be a source of embarrassment for Mr. Obama that his home town remained a cesspit of murder and other violent crimes while he was president. Even the election of his former chief-of-staff Rahm Emanuel as mayor did not relieve the city of its violent crime epidemic. Since Mr. Emanuel is a strong supporter of Chicago remaining a “sanctuary city,” his position is unlikely to help matters.
So, could it be that President Trump will fix the crime problem in Chicago that his predecessor and his predecessor’s top lieutenant could not correct? So it would seem.
Mr. Trump has ordered the ATF to send twenty top agents in the form of a team to address the painfully high rate of violent crime in Chicago. The ATF announced that it, “is exploring various options as we are committed to furthering law enforcement efforts in Chicago. One of those options is to send additional agents to Chicago on permanent transfers. ATF is still early in the process of developing strategies and will be prepared to discuss these options further once plans are finalized.”
Once again we see a president who is prepared to lead, and to defend the people of this country. It should not be the job of Washington to go fix a crime problem in one of the nation’s cities. These crimes are essentially a local matter and should be addressed by local authorities. Yet people are suffering, no doubt due to incompetent and corrupt local leadership.
How ironic if it turns out that the people of Chicago are better served by President Trump than by its most famous former citizen, Mr. Obama.
