As Conservatives, we are all acutely aware that our government, however well-meaning it might think it is (and often times, it is malice aforethought for many in government offices), are heavy-handed and ill-mannered. They don’t use a lot of common sense when it comes to the way they treat the American taxpayer.
Last month, a story ran about how the federal government was paying third-party debt collectors to recover school loans through government programs. For every $1 that the debt collectors recovered, our magnanimous federal government in the Swamps of Washington DC paid them $40! Outlandish, yet true. That truly shows how little regard Big Brother has for the lowly taxpayer.
In a small town in Texas, Miss Gerry Suttle, a 75-year-old woman living in Riesel, was shocked to hear that an arrest warrant had been issued for her! Her crime: She had let the grass on her lawn grow too long! Because she was issued a court date and failed to appear, she was going to be put under arrest! Four brothers heard the story on the news and immediately leaped into action. They arrived without notice and mowed Miss Suttle’s lawn!
When four young brothers in Riesel, Texas, saw a report on the news two summers ago about an elderly woman being targeted by their town’s oppressive government for letting her grass grow too high, they knew they needed to take action, pronto.
The debacle began when Miss Gerry Suttle, 75, was issued a notice to appear before a local judge because the grass on a lot she owned near her home had risen beyond 18 inches. Because she failed to appear for the hearing, a warrant was issued for her arrest.
According to CBS News, she claimed she never received the notice.
Regardless, when Blaine Reynolds and his…brothers heard about her story on the news, they took action.
In an act of good will, the boys sneaked onto the lawn without ever meeting the woman, and decided to mow her lawn for her.
“It’s a summer day, we don’t have season passes yet to Hawaiian Falls, what else could we do but go out and help some people?” Blaine reportedly said to local station KWTX. “We haven’t met her yet but she’s 75 years old and she needs some help mowing. That’s the least we could do.”
“I really wouldn’t want her coming out here and doing it or paying someone else to when we could have just done if for free,” added his brother, Brandon.
Suttle was stunned: “I cannot believe this,” she reportedly said. “I am very seldom without words. This is one time.
You might want to mark it down in history that I didn’t have something to say.”
“I’d do it for her a second time, or a third time,” Blaine had said. “Anything to keep that lady from having to go to court.”
In hearing this lovely story about young men who wanted to help out their fellow neighbor, it is a nice reminder for everyone that when government fails us, humanity does not.
Another lesson in being kind to your neighbor.
