For the past few months we’ve been following the story of the Pakistani Muslim IT staffers who worked for Democratic members of Congress. We noted with interest when this story first broke that it seemed odd that members of Congress could not find Americans to do their IT work for them as opposed to those from a nation that harbors terrorists.
We questioned the wisdom of hiring these people who would obviously have access to confidential, if not classified materials. It got even weirder when it turned out that they were mostly all related. Then we found out that they were paid millions of dollars for their work, some of which was paid to alleged workers who did very little at all.
This whole case seems more than just a little suspicious. In other words, instead of getting news that explains away what seems strange, we get revelations that only deepen the concern that unethical if not criminal acts were being committed. Confirmation of those concerns arrived in the form of the arrest by the FBI of the ring-leader of this group, Imran Awan, as he was attempting to flee the U.S.
Most of the Democrats who had hired this group to provide IT services, fired them months ago. However, at least one Democrat, former DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz kept Mr. Awan on her staff until the day the FBI nabbed him.
We later learned that Mr. Awan had in his possession at his home smashed hard-drives that were connected to Mrs. Wasserman Schultz. This is another oddity. Why did he have them at his home? Why were they smashed? The obvious answer to the second question is an attempt to destroy data. There is no obvious answer to the first question.
That she kept this suspicious fellow on her staff until the day the FBI hauled Awan off to jail suggests that Debbie might be in some serious trouble herself. An open, honest answer as to why she kept Mr. Awan on her staff until the day the FBI arrested him would be very interesting to hear.
The plot thickened when it was revealed that Awan’s wife, Hina Alvi, is returning to the U.S. to answer charges against her, and no doubt to give evidence, possibly in return for consideration on any charges she might face. This is likely to be very bad news for Debbie as well as any other members of Congress who employed this IT team.
Put bluntly, did Mr. Awan and his associates sell classified material to terrorist organizations in the Middle-East? And, if so, what might Wasserman Schultz know about all of this? What does Debbie’s friend Hina Alvi know and why is she returning to the U.S.? This story is far from over. In fact, we are just in the first few innings.
“Last week, the Washington Examiner reported that a former Democrat staffer who fled the country to Pakistan after being accused of fraud has struck a deal with authorities to return to the U.S. and face charges. Following the report, Rep. Trent Franks suggested that her stunning decision to return might portend very badly for Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz.
This returning staffer would be Awan’s wife, Hina Alvi. An associate of Wasserman Schultz, she fled the U.S., then returned to answer charges and give evidence in the ongoing criminal investigations. None of this is good news for Debbie.
“This brings us to Franks, the Texas Republican, who predicted during a discussion with Fox Business host Lou Dobbs last week that the only reason Alvi would have agreed to return is because she’s working on a broader immunity deal in return for damaging information on Wasserman Schultz.
“That would mean major problems for the Democrat Party, considering Wasserman Schultz was the party’s chairwoman until being forced out last summer in the scandal over rigging the primary contest for Hillary Clinton.”
Getting involved in scandals, such as using her position as DNC chair to rig the primaries in favor of Hillary and against Mr. Sanders, apparently is nothing new for Debbie. However, this time she might have gone beyond shady political deals to something far more serious.
Here’s Congressman Franks being interviewed by Louis Dobbs:
“I don’t want to talk out of school here, but I think you’re going to see some revelations that are going to be pretty profound,” Franks said. “The fact that this wife is coming back from Pakistan and is willing to face charges, as it were, I think there is a good chance she is going to reach some type of immunity to tell a larger story here that is going to be pretty disturbing to the American people.”
“I would just predict that this is going to be a very significant story and people should fasten their seat belts on this one,” he added.
Wasserman Schultz’s odd behavior over the past couple of months certainly suggests she’s been desperate to keep Alvi and Awan loyal to her to keep them from revealing something to the authorities that could incriminate her.
Stolen computer gear, smashed hard drives, confiscated notebook computers, foreign IT staffers, indictments, millions of dollars for IT services that cannot be explained, a disgraced former chair of the DNC, accusations of the sale of classified materials to foreign terrorists – this has all the makings of a major scandal involving numerous high-level officials within the Democratic Party as well as Democratic members of Congress.
Debbie is having a very bad time of it, and it is only likely to get worse as those accused of criminal behavior start singing to try to save their own skin. Poor Debbie never learned the kindergarten lesson that you should pick your friends very carefully.
