The strange case of the Muslim IT specialists supposedly providing services to maybe 40 Democratic congresspersons continues to offer puzzling revelations. We’ve had to speculate as to why these people were hired instead of Americans who could have been easily vetted for such sensitive work.
We don’t know why most of these congresspersons fired them months before Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz finally dismissed the one who was arrested on fraud charges as he was trying to flee the country. We don’t know why these IT staffers, largely from the same Pakistani family, were paid millions of dollars for questionable services.
Now we have another mystery. The ringleader of the bunch, the guy who is under indictment for fraud, Mr. Imran Awan, still has a secret, active email account with the House of Representatives. Is there no one competent to handle basic law enforcement matters in Washington? Why does a man who has been fired, indicted by the FBI for multiple charges, and about to stand trial still have his congressional email account?
“A former IT aide suspected of stealing equipment and data from Congress still has an active, secret email account on the House computer system, even though he has been banned from the congressional network because of a criminal investigation into the alleged cybersecurity violations, The Daily Caller News Foundation Investigative Group has learned.
“Imran Awan’s still-active email address is linked to the name of a House staffer who specializes in intelligence and homeland security matters for Indiana Democratic Rep. André Carson. Court documents and emails obtained by TheDCNF show Awan used the address firstname.lastname@example.org in addition to his standard email@example.com account.”
So Mr. Awan, who could very well be a foreign spy, and is supposedly banned from the congressional network, and who is under indictment, still has a secret email account? Of course it’s not very secret anymore if we know about it. But how are these things allowed to happen? Especially if his secret account was connected somehow a staffer involved with intelligence and homeland security matters?
If this is the case, whomever is in charge of House security needs to be fired and investigated.
“Authorities shut down Awan’s standard email account Feb. 2, and he was arrested by the FBI at Dulles International Airport trying to board a flight to his native Pakistan on July 25.
“Authorities apparently did not realize Awan has a second account that is not linked to his identity. While his main email address began rejecting mail after it was shut down, the 123 address was still accepting mail Tuesday.”
As has been pointed out in the column before, one could be forgiven for wondering if the only persons who are not privilege to confidential or secret government information are the average citizens of America.
Those who have employed Awan in the past including a spokesperson for the aforementioned Rep. André Carson predictably claim no knowledge of all of this. Believe that at your own risk.
What is needed is what we are hopefully going to get: a trial during which the facts about this highly suspicious case are revealed to the public. To the degree that such a trial does not get to the bottom of what was a serious breech of security, possibly enabled by members of Congress, it’s time for yet another congressional investigation. Only this time, staffed by aggressive, competent, and impartial investigators.
