Well, we’re early on into the Trump presidency, and there are already talks about the presidential election in the year 2020. I guess the Democrats don’t like the idea of losing two election cycles in a row, which they ultimately will.
If they can’t beat Trump while he’s in the White House, using the Russian scandal as bait, then there is no way that they are going to beat Trump in four years.
That being said, there are some politically hungry individuals ready to jump all in as a Democratic candidate. But someone is starting their campaign exceptionally early. Who is it? No, it’s not Hillary, it’s New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.
From Western Journalism:
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has hired two Florida fundraisers, according to a report by the New York Post, fueling speculation that he’s building the groundwork for a 2020 presidential bid.
Sources told the Post that former Hillary Clinton fundraiser Jon Adrabi is one of the solicitors nabbed by the New York governor.
Cuomo has repeatedly insisted he is focused on his upcoming re-election campaign for his third term in 2018 and has no intention to run for the presidency.
However, Democratic operatives say that Cuomo’s efforts to hire out-of-state fundraisers is a sign that he is laying the groundwork for a presidential bid.
“Hiring out-of-state fundraising staff, particularly in a battleground state, opens up money spigots beyond what would normally be available and is a key first step to laying the groundwork for a run,” an unnamed Democratic operative told the Post…
“He is positioning himself to be seen as a liberal who can speak to a national audience,” added Karen Hinton, a former aide for Cuomo.
Cuomo used his appearance at the NGA’s winter meeting to brand himself as a politician that can get things done. He is likely hoping to differentiate himself from prominent Democratic legislators like Elisabeth Warren and Cory Booker.
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., has already signaled her support for Cuomo if he were to launch a presidential bid. “He’s done great things in our state. I love the fact that he’s focused on paid leave and marriage equality, so he’s a terrific governor,” she said during a recent interview on NY1.
Gillibrand added that the New York governor would be a “great candidate” for 2020.
However, the progressive wing of the Democratic party isn’t yet sold on Cuomo, who consider him to be a centrist. His relationship with President Bill Clinton, who he considers to be a mentor, doesn’t help.
I guess the big question comes down to whether or not Bill Clinton’s blessing would be to a new candidate like Mr. Cuomo, or if Hillary will force her way back into the limelight and attempt a third presidential run. Do you think Hillary will run in 2020? Comment below and tell us!
