Eventually the point is reached when accommodations are no longer feasible. For institutions to function, it is impossible to cater to the desires of every minority group, lest the entire organization collapse. This is part of what we tacitly agree to when we choose to participate in society or in a group. It’s just that simple and obvious.
Unfortunately, groups of Muslims don’t buy into this and demand that schools, businesses, and other institutions make special accommodations for their beliefs. To repeat the statement just made, if this were to be done for every religious or cultural group, either costs would skyrocket, or the organizations would collapse, or both. And who would decide which groups’ desires will be met and which will be left wanting? It just won’t work.
A mayor in a small French town has had enough of Muslim demands that pork never be served. He has ruled that a balanced meal will be provided for students that will include a variety of meats including pork. In other words, the Muslims will no longer dictate school lunch policies.
The Gateway Pundit has the story: “The Mayor of Chevigny-Saint Sauveur has announced that he will ban alternative school lunch menus that exclude pork, to promote secularism. Mayor Michel Rotger is a French conservative who is saying ‘NO’ to accommodating Islamic tyranny, insisting secular values be upheld in public schools in Chevigny- Saint Saver.”
And that’s all there is to it. The school is a secular institution and therefore will not consider religious demands.
“‘We are putting an operation in place so the children eat everything and their diets are balanced. There is too much waste so we will teach them to eat meat, be it poultry or pork,’ said Rotger, according to Breitbart.”
This is one symptom of the problem that many in the West have with Islam. It’s not that their faith is different, it’s that Muslim leaders seem to expect western nations to change their customs and laws so that they are like the countries they left. Which immediately begs the question as to why, if Islamic traditions are so essential to them, did they ever choose to immigrate into a culture that is largely foreign?
We could perhaps offer some reasons for their migration from those Muslim nations, but it would require us to make some distinctly uncharitable comments. And that’s not the point of this article.
The point is that for whatever reason, Muslim migrants have chosen to move to nations that are either highly secular or which have a Christian cultural heritage, as attenuated as that might now be. It is not reasonable and is, in fact, offensive, to arrive in a nation as a guest and start making demands that would turn the society upside down.
To be blunt, if Islamic culture, law, and practices are that important to you, great. There are plenty of countries available from which to choose in which you can engage in those Islamic practices to your heart’s content.
Just don’t try to force your beliefs off on others, at least not in the schools of Chevigny-Saint Sauveur in France.
