We make statements and offer opinions all the time that are not meant to be taken in a wooden, literal sense. “That’s the worst coffee I’ve ever had,” isn’t meant to be taken literally, but is an expression of real disgust. These are just figures of speech that add a bit of color to our conversations.
When it comes to politicians, such statements are routine. Donald Trump referred to Hillary as “the worst secretary of state in history.” No one would suggest that Mr. Trump had studied, or conducted a study of, every person who has served as secretary of state, established some appropriate criteria and ranked them all with Hillary winding up in the basement. He just meant that she was a terrible secretary of state, and this suggests that she would be a terrible president. (And we agree.)
Hence, when we see a headline claiming that Mr. Obama was the laziest president in history, we naturally wonder how the author of that headline came to that conclusion. How is that meant? In this case, it turns out that naming Mr. Obama as the Laziest President in US History, isn’t just an exercise in hyperbole. There’s a method going on here.
If laziness is to be measured, in part at least, by the amount of time and money spent on vacations, it looks like Mr. Obama deserves that title. “President Obama’s travel expenses cost taxpayers more than $96 million during his time in office, according to a report from the watchdog group Judicial Watch. The group obtained documents from the Secret Service and Air Force that revealed President Obama’s travel over the last eight years totaled $96,938,882.51.”
Continuing the indictment of Obama for laziness, the report continues: “’The Obamas’ notorious abuse of presidential travel perks wasted military resources and stressed the Secret Service,’ said Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch. ‘Judicial Watch estimates that the final costs of Obama’s unnecessary vacation and political travel will well exceed $100 million. President-elect Trump can immediately save taxpayers money by reforming presidential travel.’”
Well, at least Obama was consistent. He couldn’t care less about reckless spending, regardless of whether it was for bloated government programs or his family’s personal joyrides at the taxpayers’ expense. Then again, given the decisions he made, programs he promoted, and executive orders he issued, perhaps we would have been better off had he been on perpetual vacation these past eight years.
Given his aversion to being on the job in Washington, and his preference for endless vacations and golf outings, perhaps he has earned the title of “Laziest President in US History.”
