The name “Marwan Barghouti” might not mean anything to you, but this is one man you would not want to meet. Which right now isn’t a problem since he is serving five life sentences plus 40 years in an Israeli prison for murdering five persons and attempting a failed suicide bombing.
This guy is an example of some of the Palestinians with whom Israel is forced to contend. Terrorists do nothing to advance the Palestinian cause, and instead illustrate the need for Israel to maintain robust and effective police and defense forces.
Barghouti has initiated a hunger strike among 1,500 prisoners where he is incarcerated. What is at least mildly entertaining is that he has been caught in the bathroom cheating on the hunger strike by eating cookies and candy bars. Some leader, huh?
Ever the promoter of misguided causes, the New York Times offered Barghouti some space to plead his cause: “‘Having spent the last 15 years in an Israeli prison, I have been both a witness to and a victim of Israel’s illegal system of mass arbitrary arrests and ill-treatment of Palestinian prisoners,’ Barghouti wrote. ‘After exhausting all other options, I decided there was no choice but to resist these abuses by going on a hunger strike,’ he continued.”
Quite a sob story for a man convicted of murdering five people. The thing is, he’s not even following his own hunger strike, an act one would expect that he wants his fellow inmates to pursue.
The Washington Free Beacon has the story: “In the video, Barghouti can be seen walking into his bathroom with an object in his hands on two separate occasions. The Israel Prison Service said that Barghouti ate two cookies, a chocolate bar, and a package of salt between the two instances. The incidents occurred on April 27 and May 5, according to the Israel Prison Service.”
If Mr. Barghouti were to successfully carry his hunger strike to its conclusion, it would only save Israel the cost of housing and feeding a man for the rest of his life who is a murder and a terrorist, and would no doubt repeat those atrocities if he were released.
He serves as a warning to those who are willing to consider tolerating terrorists in their midst.
