There is a very strange affinity among some on the left for the Islamic faith. This is especially troubling given the fact that there are many principles the left holds dear that are utterly irreconcilable with any fundamental understanding of Islam.
Could it be that some liberals are so disdainful of Christianity that most any system of belief that conflicts with the Bible will get their approval? What other explanation is there? When you look at the place that women occupy in the Muslim faith, how does one reconcile that with liberal feminism? The answer is that you don’t.
The left was very eager to eliminate Christian prayer from the public school classroom, and succeeded in that effort in the 1960s when the matter was settled by the U.S. Supreme Court. Now we have public schools catering specifically to the desires of Muslim students, and the left seems to have conveniently forgotten its way. And in Texas, an outrageous practice by one high school has just attracted the attention of the Texas Attorney General.
The Daily Caller reports that, “Liberty High School in Frisco, Texas has provoked public outrage and has even gotten the attention of the Texas Attorney General’s office after creating a prayer room for Muslim students in which they only are allowed to pray to Allah every Friday instead of leaving campus for a couple of hours to visit a mosque.”
Wait a minute. Whoever said that students could leave school to practice the religious faith of their choice? If that were the case at the public high school this author attended, I can guarantee you that a couple of thousand kids would have gotten very serious about their religion very quickly.
The next issue is the prayer room. How does one square the establishment of a center of religious worship for one particular faith within a public school? Again, the answer is that the Supreme Court settled that issue over fifty years ago.
Obviously, the office of the Texas Attorney General recognizes the problem, and sent this school district a letter, an excerpt from which is produced below:
“Other practices at Liberty High School, however, raise concerns. Reports from Liberty’s news site indicate that the prayer room is not available to students of all faiths. Instead, it appears that the prayer room is ‘dedicated to the religious needs of some students’ – namely those who practice Islam. …
“Liberty High School’s policy should be neutral toward religion. However it appears that students are being treated differently based on their religious beliefs. Such a practice, of course, is irreconcilable with our nation’s enduring commitment to religious liberty.”
It does not require a Ph.D in Education to solve this. Since Christians who wish their children to have religious instruction in their faith must enroll their students in private schools, the same thing goes for those of all faiths, including Islam.
If the Muslim students and their parents don’t like this, that’s too bad. Muslims students should be treated equally with their non-Muslim peers. This means they show up for school during the regular hours like all others. If they cannot live with this, they need to attend a private Muslim school.
In the meantime, the Islamic prayer room needs to be closed down, and whomever authorized it in the first place be disciplined or fired.
