The left often misunderstands or at least misinterprets the purpose of our military. It is not to engage in social engineering projects in foreign lands. Nor is it to lead nation-building efforts. It exists to defend the people of the United States by defeating our enemies.
When this fact is ignored, we see our military personnel and assets wasted on missions that accomplish little to nothing. Those failures are not the fault of our military, but are the fault of political leaders who send our armed forces on errands that are at variance with what they have been trained and equipped to do.
This is illustrated by Mr. Obama’s misguided strategy in allegedly fighting ISIS. He was unwilling to prosecute the conflict to a successful conclusion, that being the elimination of that terrorist threat. In contrast, under the authority granted by President Trump, Secretary of Defense Mattis has directed that our military begin a strategy of annihilating this enemy.
“Secretary of Defense James Mattis instructed the U.S. military to abandon Obama administration procedures and start focusing on killing Islamic State fighters instead, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph Dunford told Breaking Defense.
“‘When Secretary Mattis looked at our anti-ISIS campaign, he concluded that in some instances we were essentially just pushing the enemy from one location to another,’ Dunford explained. ‘He asked me and the military chain-of-command to make a conscious effort not to allow ISIS fighters to just flee from one location to another, but rather to deliberately seek to ‘annihilate’ the enemy,’ he continued.”
Mr. Obama’s strategy seemed to be one of hoping to discourage ISIS fighters so they would just give up, lay down their weapons, and go home to live otherwise peaceful lives. But that strategy misunderstands the determination of those who have joined ISIS. Secretary Mattis is under no such delusions.
“‘We have already shifted from attrition tactics where we shove them from one position to another in Iraq and Syria, to annihilation tactics where we surround them. Our intention is that the foreign fighters do not survive the fight to return home to North Africa, to Europe, to America, to Asia, to Africa. We’re not going to allow them to do so. We’re going to stop them there and take apart the caliphate,’ Mattis declared in a late May interview with CBSNews.”
That is a clear definition of the goal of the operation. And it is precisely what is needed. It’s what the military can work with, and more importantly, it is a directive that can be pursued to a successful conclusion.
