Texas is a battleground for the sanctuary city movement. You know the idea. Illegal aliens can flee to cities that have designated themselves as such in order to be shielded from ICE and deportation. It’s a case of these cities thumbing their noses at legitimate federal law enforcement powers, and as such is an abomination.
Much ink has been spilled on why they do this with the left claiming compassion as its motivation as usual. What is more likely is that proponents of blocking deportation see these masses of illegals as a terrific source of future Democratic voters once they have been shielded, provided with welfare benefits, and eventually, voting rights. If it turned out that 90% of the illegals were likely to become Republicans, it would be interesting to see if the leaders of sanctuary cities would still be so “compassionate.”
Texas has passed a law to ban sanctuary cities. A federal judge, not surprisingly, issued an injunction preventing the enforcement of that law. Hence, sanctuary cities are once again legal in Texas. Yet, that’s not the end of it as the governor and attorney general will appeal this ridiculous injunction in the hope of bringing their state law back into force.
“U.S. District Judge Orlando Garcia in San Antonio issued a temporary injunction against Senate Bill 4, which was set to go into effect Friday, reports Associated Press.
“SB4 is widely regarded as the toughest statewide anti-sanctuary city law in the country. The bill allows police officers to inquire about the immigration status of people they detain or arrest and requires local law enforcement agencies to honor detention requests from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). It also allows Texas to remove police chiefs and sheriffs from office if they refuse to comply with the law.
“Supporters including Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and state Attorney General Ken Paxton say SB4 is a constitutionally sound measure that will take dangerous criminals off the street.”
The battle for secure borders and the enforcement of our nation’s immigration laws continue in spite of the left’s desire to grow their voting ranks by suing to have laws consistent with federal statutes declared unconstitutional. It’s a disingenuous approach, but not one that comes as any surprise.
“In response to the decision, Paxton said he was confident SB4 will ultimately be upheld in federal court.
“‘Senate Bill 4 was passed by the Texas Legislature to set a statewide policy of cooperation with federal immigration authorities enforcing our nation’s immigration laws,’ he said in a statement. ‘Texas has the sovereign authority and responsibility to protect the safety and welfare of its citizens.'”
On the other hand, Texas has a lot of electoral votes and is solidly Republican in state-wide elections. So it’s important to the left to pour millions of potential Democratic voters into the state, damn the laws, in order to flip it blue. So for the left, the sanctuary cities are essential.
Hence, it is important that Texas’ law stands. If the left wants more Democratic voters, then they need to get out and make their case to the voters in Texas, not import illegals to create a new pool of Democrats.
