Despite all the histrionics from the left, President Trump continues to fulfill his campaign promise to crack down on illegal immigration, including the deportation of illegal immigrants. We’re not sure whether the liberals are more upset with President Trump setting an example of keeping campaign promises, or the potential loss of millions of Democratic voters who, as illegals, shouldn’t even be voting in the first place.
It’s probably the latter. After all, the Democrats’ strategy is clear. Open the borders, herd the illegals into sanctuary cities, warehouse them there while providing welfare benefits, then get the them voting rights. Then sit back and wait for them to thank their Democratic benefactors at the polls.
It’s not working as well anymore and the left is furious. With the president’s decision to sunset DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) in the background, a program Mr. Obama admitted was illegal when he created it, ICE has announced the institution of “Operation Mega,” the goal of which is to arrest up to 8,400 illegals in five days. And get ready, because it’s coming on September 17.
According to NBC News, “President Donald Trump’s Department of Homeland Security is planning nationwide raids to target 8,400 undocumented immigrants later this month, according to three law enforcement officials and an internal document that described the plan as ‘the largest operation of its kind in the history of ICE,’ an acronym for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
“The raids, scheduled over five days beginning Sept. 17, are being called ‘Operation Mega,’ according to the document, a memo circulated agency-wide in August.”
It must be remembered that this sort of aggressive enforcement of the nation’s laws has an impact beyond just those illegals who get arrested. News travels, including into Mexico and other nations. If the U.S. is seen as a nation that does not tolerate people entering the country illegally, the motivation to do so will drop.
While this will have a chilling impact on those considering an illegal entry into the U.S., as well as those who prey on them by charging them fees to smuggle them in, it will not end the problem.
Hence, enforcement of our immigration laws is only one step. And it must be an ongoing effort. But demonstration that others should take our laws seriously should begin with our leadership and law enforcement agencies showing they take the laws seriously.
Hence, programs like Operation Mega are just what are needed.
