The sanctuary city movement and the ability of illegal immigrants to remain here are increasingly threatened by the moves of the Justice Department, as well as Immigration and Customs Enforcement, as they actually enforce the nations’ laws.
Liberals will howl at the potential numbers, but it is not a new concept to hold people responsible for obeying the law, regardless of how many might choose to do otherwise.
President Trump’s director of ICE has made it clear that while violent illegals will receive top priority for deportment, detainers can be issued to anyone living in the US illegally.
“In testimony before Congress on Tuesday, the head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement warned illegal immigrants that while the government is prioritizing the deportation of undocumented criminals, all 11 million individuals who are illegally in the country are potential targets for deportation.
“‘No population is off the table,’ acting ICE Director Thomas D. Homan said before a House Appropriations subcommittee hearing, according to the Washington Examiner. ‘We’ll issue detainers to anybody in the country illegally.’
“‘Our priorities are criminals first, but if you’re asking me if we are going to put detainers on people that have not been convicted of a crime, yes we will,’ Homan said.”
The tragedy here is that enforcement of the law, lack thereof, by previous administrations let these illegal immigrants settle in the country in the first place. This should never have happened, and now the Trump administration has the unhappy task of cleaning up yet another mess left by derelict prior administrations.
“Detainers are the first step in the deportation process. While Homan said that his department was ‘not out doing sweeps,’ he added that it was a bad idea to ‘send a message’ that if you ‘get by the Border Patrol and get into the interior (of the U.S.) as long as you don’t go and break another law you’re home free.'”
This is exactly the message that was not only sent to illegals, but which was proven to be true by our history of failing to enforce our laws.
As if to put a point on the issue, Homan “also offered a blunt assessment of why arrests of both undocumented criminals and illegal immigrants are up, and it reflected badly on the Barack Obama White House: ‘We weren’t allowed to arrest them in the past administration,’ Homan said.”
We somehow have survived the Obama administration. At least so far. Let’s hope the impact of his misgovernment is quickly dispatched by President Trump.
