No one expected a simple baseball practice to turn so ugly.
Republican congressionals were out practicing for a charity event later this week. Little did they suspect that a gunman would open rounds of fire on the grounds, injuring one top Republican, a staff member, and two Capitol Police members.
President Trump immediately issued a statement that is nothing short of shocking. He stated that the Rep. Steve Scalise was “badly injured but will fully recover.” The tragedy in this statement lies in the fact that Rep. Scalise was a target by a crazed gunman, and that his injury is so bad it is landing him in the hospital for full treatment.
From Fox News:
President Trump said Wednesday he is “deeply saddened” by the tragic shooting at a congressional baseball practice where House Majority Whip Steve Scalise was “badly injured” — but said he’s expected to make a full recovery.
“Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, a true friend and patriot, was badly injured but will fully recover. Our thoughts and prayers are with him,” Trump tweeted.
In a written statement, Trump said he and Vice President Pence are “monitoring developments closely.”
“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of Congress, their staffs, Capitol Police, first responders, and all others affected,” he said.
Press Secretary Sean Spicer also said on Twitter: “Both @POTUS & @VP are aware of the developing situation in Virginia. Our thoughts and prayers are with all affected.”
Scalise was shot in the hip, and others were also hit, during the practice in Alexandria, Va.
There is no reason for any congressional to ever be badly injured by an attack. This brings up many questions that are yet to remain unanswered – how did the shooter know where the baseball practice was – how did the shooter obtain all of his firearms – why did the shooter target Republicans – the list goes on and on.
Hopefully we find out more answers soon, and that the suspect in custody becomes fully accountable for his actions.
