It’s beginning to look like the term “classified US government document” simply means a document that is available to anyone in the world to view except average American citizens. WikiLeaks has somehow received and released such classified materials. No doubt agents of foreign countries have hacked into government servers to retrieve classified documents. Then we have Hillary’s infamous and notorious insecure email server that contained classified stuff that appears to have been pretty much free for the asking.
Now it increasingly appears that the former director of the FBI, of all people, can’t keep a secret.
A deputy attorney general has confirmed that former director Comey did leak materials that contained classified information to the press in what he describes as a breech of FBI policy. What does that mean, that Comey broke the law?
“Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said Wednesday that fired FBI Director James Comey broke FBI agency protocol by giving memos to a friend to then have leaked to the press.
“As TGP previously reported, more than half of the memos fired FBI Director James Comey wrote during his private conversations with President Trump have been determined to contain classified information.
“FBI policy forbids any agent from releasing classified information or any information from ongoing investigations. All records created by agents during official duties are also considered to be government property.“
What was Mr. Comey doing? What was the purpose of doing something he had to know was at least a violation of FBI protocol if not the law?
According to The Hill, “[m]ore than half of the memos former FBI chief James Comey wrote as personal recollections of his conversations with President Trump about the Russia investigation have been determined to contain classified information, according to interviews with officials familiar with the documents.
“This revelation raises the possibility that Comey broke his own agency’s rules and ignored the same security protocol that he publicly criticized Hillary Clinton for in the waning days of the 2016 presidential election.”
As an aside, there’s Hillary turning up in the story. Apparently it’s hard to find a good scandal in Washington that doesn’t somehow connect back to her.
There’s one word that these reports keep dancing around and avoiding: “law.” Mr. Comey broke “the rules.” He “violated protocol.”
If he leaked classified data, didn’t he break “the law?” Isn’t it time for someone within the Department of Justice to clarify this matter? It’s can be for lack of enough lawyers to come to an opinion on something that looks rather straightforward.
And if official Washington will not say, “he broke the law,” why not?
Far too many questions remain to be answered.
