You could be excused for thinking that the world is taking on the characteristics of tabloid journalism. It has become difficult to avoid the news stories filled with lurid sexual content. The problem is apparently just that wide-spread. The question that remains is whether what we are seeing represents an increase in reprehensible sexual conduct, or just a media that has chosen to focus on it to a greater degree. Either way, it’s unpleasant.
The reported offenses seem to be localized in the political arena and in the entertainment industry. These are venues populated with highly visible individuals, so this comes as no surprise. And sleaze just seems to follow many who pursue such careers.
The news media is also part of this group. The Guardian is a leftist news publican in Britain. Four of its staffers have been accused of sexual misconduct ranging from harassment to groping. If all of these reports don’t raise women’s concerns over being a victim of sexual assault, someone isn’t paying attention.
“BuzzFeed News reports that the Guardian, a left-wing news outlet, currently has four staffers under investigation for everything from sexual harassment to groping. Included in the group is Ian Prior, a senior editor in charge of the Guardian’s digital verticals.
“Two unnamed male reporters are also under investigation, which means all three join Matt Sullivan, the Guardian’s deputy U.S. editor, who is currently dealing with a complaint (he denies) of groping. ‘He’s alleged to have put his hand underneath a female employee’s shirt, on her torso and abdomen, and in the back pockets of her jeans,’ BuzzFeed reports.”
This is all very explicit. And very annoying. Clearly we have pockets within our society where men simply refuse to treat women with the respect they deserve. There may be a lot of reasons for this, such as an environment of increased sexual freedom and terrible role models. Yet those remain just possible contributing factors. They are never excuses for such reprehensible behaviors which range from offensive to illegal.
It would seem that male members of what might be called the “elite media” have been busy treating their female colleagues with utter disrespect:
“This bombshell news adds the progressive Guardian to an ever-growing list of elite media outlets embroiled in a mushrooming sex scandal that has already tagged Mark Halperin of NBC News and ABC News, David Corn of Mother Jones, Leon Wieseltier and Hamilton Fish of the New Republic, Michael Oreskes of NPR and the New York Times, and Matt Taibbi and Jann Wenner of Rolling Stone.”
What a collection of apparent degenerates.
It does little good to complain or bemoan the state of affairs in Hollywood and other parts of the media. We are responsible for what we take in and for what our children are exposed to. If anyone ever doubted, this current disgrace makes plain that we must take such responsibilities seriously.
The problem with degenerate politicians – sexually, morally, or financially – has a much more straightforward solution. If Congress will not police itself, just vote them out. Actually, there’s a bit of hope in this regard: Hillary, the queen of corruption, is not president.
